In this podcast you're wondering why people even bother to play games that are crude, imperfect simulations of life. I don't know why, but I remember that back in my Atari XE days, I was especially fascinated not by smooth elegant graphics but angular lines that were only suggestive of what they represented; what was really cool about them was that while the object represented was clearly recognizable, it had the computerized look which made it even better than the original. Gradually, I got bored with the Atari coarse-grained pixelization, and I started looking for hi-fidelity. I think the same will happen to life-simluations.
